What I discovered with Weller was indeed a field- a rich and varied playing field- on which many factors are operative, not the least of which is his own biography. Weller was born in Lennoxville, PQ. His parents moved to Thunder Bay when he was 5 years old, and he spent the next 18 years of his life in this area. He graduated from Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate & Vocational Institute and enrolled in the Fine Arts program at Lakehead University where his late father Geoffrey Weller was a Professor in Political Science and Vice President Academic. Duncan changed his major to English Literature in his second year. He had always wanted to illustrate books, but he quickly recognized that to have firm artistic control, he needed to be the source of the stories themselves as well as creator of the images. His positive experiences in James Gellert's Children's Literature course, as well as doing photography, covers and cartoons for the campus magazine, The Argus, were all part of his training experience. His decision to return to Lakehead University to pursue his HBA in English in 2005 was an extension of that path.
