The Model Book of Calligraphy Mira calligraphiae monumenta first appeared in the early 16th Century, the work of Georg Bocksay, Court Secretary to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II, King of Hungary and Croatia, King of Bohemia and Archduke of Austria. Thirty years later the Emperor's Grandson, after inheriting the manuscript, commissioned Flemish artist Joris Hoefnagel to add illustrations. Hoefnagel also provided comprehensive instruction in constructing the letters of the medieval alphabet. Current owners of the manuscript, The J. Paul Getty Museum, describe the work as "one of the most unusual collaborations between scribe and painter in the history of manuscript illumination". Our journal edition not only utilizes Hoefnagel's work for its covers, but also offers the opportunity to undertake exercises in old calligraphy by following the medieval alphabet of only 23 letters (!!). The black & white shadow images in the back of each journal can be coloured or used for practice. Moreover, a further 85 pages of dot grid paper are provided to allow for the development of calligraphy, for creating bullet style journals, drawing and many other purposes.
