"Gustave Whitehead was an aviation pioneer. His first experiments with powered airplanes took place in 1897. Although he left almost no personal records, Whitehead did regularly invite journalists to witness his new aircraft roll-outs and maiden flights. In 1901--years before the Wright brothers--he made a successful powered flight, duly witnessed by a journalist. For decades after that, reports of Whitehead's pioneering accomplishments remained forgotten. It wasn't until 1933 that researchers started looking for them. But it would be many more decades until the age of digitization before the full extent of the once-lost record would begin to emerge. This series documents the current state of that research"--Back cover of volume I.
