The Holy Bible extensively uses fire symbolically to express spiritual truth. Biblical literalists contend that the Bible is literally true, which includes the literal use of fire, especially, in regard to judgment and hell. The best example that fire, in relation to God and judgment, is used symbolically, rather than literally, is God being "a consuming fire.” Certainly, God, whom the Bible proclaims to be “Spirit/Light/Love/Fire,” is not in a state of combustion! This indisputable truth is also expressed in Jesus’ mixed metaphor for the purpose of Gehenna [hell, King James Version], “For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt" (Mark 9:49). The best translation of this metaphorical language is in The Good News Bible: Today’s English Version, “Everyone will be purified by fire as a sacrifice is purified by salt.” This symbolism is also translated well in the New King James Version as, "For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt." This is the glorious Good News of Christian Universalism (CU) that the early church believed, preached, and taught for the first 500 years of church history! The fact of this wonderful truth being changed to the insanely false doctrine of eternal torment/torture [ECT], in the fire of hell, is clearly explained by Dr. Boyd Purcell, from cover to cover, in this book, Symbolic Fire in the Holy Bible A Thru Z.
