In physics, harmonic motion is the projected path of a point in uniform motion around a circle. (“Simple harmonic motion“) In other words, this natural phenomenon describes the path of a swinging pendulum. If tracked over time, these paths create brilliant designs known as Lissajou figures--a term coined in 1857 by Jules Antoine Lissajous. These figures can be created using an instrument such as a harmonograph or other mechanisms that generate simple harmonic motion. My mission as an artist is to seek the unseen systems that tether us to the universe in order to deepen our connection to the natural world. In this visual case study of harmonic motion, I created my own instruments to reveal the hidden beauty of this force of nature that would be unbeknownst to us otherwise.
