This volume is a revealing inside account of a Jesuit priest from Boston who served as a naval chaplain in World War II. The author, an authority on both military and Roman Catholic history, conducted a series of frank interviews with Fr. John Foley in the last months of the priest's life. He also had total access to Foley's unexpurgated diary. The result is an encyclopedic history of the chaplaincy combined with the biography of an intellectual, courageous priest.
