Some people have the impression that Vatican II was simply a tidying-up process, or perhaps a kind of publicity stunt. The Mass was shortened and put into the vernacular, the Vatican administratation was made more efficient and so forth. But the Council was not about these things. In fact it presented a renewed view of faith--a Gospel for today--which calls for a change in attitude towards our religion, a conversion. It is not that the doctrines held before Vatican II are denied, but that deeper insights into the Gospel are possible, and doctrines not previously emphasized are given more weight. The author found that where the message of Vatican II is really proclaimed and explained it is accepted with enthusiasm.
