Too many Americans today believe that the Confederate armies were made up of only White, Protestant and Anglo-Saxon Johnny Reb's! Really? Were they? What about the nearly 40,000 Confederate Irish Catholic soldiers? How about Cherokee Brigadier General Stand Watie and his thousands of Confederate Indian soldiers? Most were recruited from the so-called Five Civilized Tribes! What about the First Louisiana Native Guards, a New Orleans regiment formed in 1861, of 1,400 men, made up entirely of men of color, plus their white officers? Did you know that Dr. Lewis Steiner of the United States Sanitary Commission observed and reported that the Confederate army that marched through and occupied Frederick, Maryland, during the 1862 Sharpsburg/Antietam campaign had "... 3,000 negroes carrying arms, rifles, muskets, sabers, bowie knives, dirks, etc. and they were clearly an integral part of Jackson's Confederate Army." Dr. Thomas C. Mandes wrote in a 2002, Washington Post article that the largest overall minority during the Civil War, i.e., to serve the Confederacy, were Jewish men and women. This includes soldiers, officials, doctors, and nurses. Many people know some things about Judah Benjamin. He held three separate Cabinet positions in Jefferson Davis' regime. Have you heard of Sargent Moses Ezekiel of New Market fame, or of Confederate Captain Simon Baruch (army physician and father of Bernard Baruch, the most successful financier of his day)? How about 1st Lieutenant Israel Greene of Harpers Ferry fame? Greene became the Inspector and Adjutant of the Confederate Marine Corps.
