This book is one of the results of the Japanese-Polish scientific cooperation in the subject "Numerical Methods of Optimization and Game Theory". The cooperation involved scientists from Hiroshima and Osaka Universities on Japanese side and from the System Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The volume consists of 8 independent and self-contained chapters and, except the last chapter, concerns two main groups of problems connected with distributed parameter systems: modelling and optimization of free boundary systems (Chapters 1 and 2), and sensitivity analysis, optimization with respect to coefficients and applications to optimal design problems (Chapters 3 through 7). Contents: Modelling and approximation of free boundary systems / Optimal control of nonlinear evolution problems with application to processes involving free boundaries / G-convergence and control in coefficients for elliptic boundary-value problems / Sensitivity and approximation of convex constrained optimal control problems / An algorithm for linearly constrained minimax problems / Shape sensitivity analysis of boundary-value problems / Shape optimization in two-dimensional elasticity / River pollution control as a conflict
