Although a minority in numbers as well as religion, the Dallas Jewish community has had twenty elected to the city council, and has provided the first elected female mayor, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, and ambassador to Russia. Merchants had a great impact on Dallas. Early merchants Alex and Philip Sanger knew success depended on the growth of the city, and they worked to achieve both for Sanger Bros. Stanley Marcus also put Dallas on the map. His store, Neiman-Marcus, became known worldwide for fashion and style. The author was a teacher with the congregation Shearith Israel, 1963 to 1977; archivist and administrator with the Dallas Jewish Historical Society, 1983-1995; and currently serves as librarian for Sheanth Israel. She is the author of a history of Sanger Bros.
