This is the second volume in a three part mini-series entitled Biomass, within the Sustainability series. Biomass is renewable organic materials, such as wood, agricultural crops or wastes, and municipal wastes, especially when used as a source of fuel or energy. Petroleum is the feedstock for all specialty chemicals including polymers, drugs, adhesives, and other end-uses. Work has begun to replace these products with biologically derived chemicals and materials. This book provides novel routes to achieve this goal and emphasizes the breadth of feedstock available.
