Not illustrated. 1920 Excerpt:...a third dactyl is added: &vrjp Ovtos 6 fiaiofievos To fiiya KpiTos (Alcaeus--but Sappho also writes the line: fivdaeaOai Tiva pafii Kal SaTepov dfifiecov)2 1 VeSrjnopev = fieSeiirouev. 2 One of the recent volumes of Oxyrhynchus papyri contains a portion of a poem of Sappho in which this verse was written /eaTd artxov. The subject was the wedding of Hector and Andromache: "EKTQJp xal avveTatpoi ayoia' iXtK&mSa @rj0as If iapas IIXo/tias T air' din aa i a/ipav 'AvSpopaxav ivl vavoiv 4w' aXiivpov V6vtov Ktx. Here the shortening awircupm is Homeric, and belongs to dactylic verse. The poems in this Oxyrhynchus volume show us both Sappho and Alcaeus (p. 55) interested in Homer, and recalling Homeric events and Homeric phraseology, It is difficult to believe that the longer lines are not dactylic; and if they contain dactyls, is it credible that the syllables--w w in the shortest line are something quite different? We have then a series or scale, in which a Glyconic grows by the accretion of dactyls: (a) Tclv S' eyco TdS' dfieifiofiav. (b) fiifivaiaO', olaOa yap &s ere ireSrjirofiev. (c) avTptyei Taya Tav iroXiv a S' iyeTai poiras. But there is also another series, starting from a Glyconic: (a) Tclv S' eyco TdS' dfieifi6fiav--cui flavam religas comam.1 (b) XdfSav Tc o £i'peos XpvaoSiTav iycov--Maecenas atavis edite regibus. (c) firjSev &kXo pvTevarjs irponpov SevSpiov dfjmeXm--nullam, Vare, sacra vite prius severis arborem." The two series are so much alike that it is almost impossible to dissociate them.
