Die humanistische Epochennomenklatur Antike, Mittelalter, Neuzeit ist ungeachtet ihrer Zahlebigkeit langst uberholt. Die Ubergangszeit zwischen Mittelalter und Neuzeit (also das 16.-18. Jahrhundert) als eigenstandige Periode - und nicht nur als blosse Schwelle zwischen zwei Epochen - zu verstehen und dabei ihre konkurrierenden Konzeptualisierungen als 'Alteuropa' und 'Fruhe Neuzeit' zu reflektieren, setzt sich dieser Band zum Ziel. - Mit Beitragen von H. E. Bodeker, E. Hinrichs, W. Schulze, M. Raeff, D. Roche, M. Richter, K.-E. Jeismann, R. Vierhaus, R. Koselleck und H. Schissler. In spite of its tenaciousness, the humanist nomenclature of various epochs (antiquity, Middle Ages, modern era) has been outdated for a long time. The aim of this volume is to understand the transition period between the Middle Ages and the modern era (the 16th to the 18th century) as a distinct period - and not merely as a gap between two epochs -and in doing so to reflect on its concurrent conceptualizations as ancient Europe and the Early Modern Age.
