Per Evolution Theory, apes became more specialized as apes, while "man-apes" became more specialized and developed high intelligence, walked on two legs, and had social cooperation. There is some debate as to the sequence of things. Did man-ape get out of the trees first, and develop greater intelligence once on more open ground, or did he develop greater intelligence while still in the trees and then decided to get down on the ground? Neither scenario makes much sense. If, per the first scenario, he got out of the trees first and then developed greater intelligence, he would have been at a disadvantage while waiting for this increased intelligence to appear.
