Proceedings of an International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy course and NATO Advanced Study Institute, held in Erice, Italy, June 1991. The course, addressed primarily to workers in the field of solid-state physics from academia and industry, presented physical models, mathematical formalisms, and experimental techniques relevant to the optical properties of excited solids.
