This book is intended to serve as a guide to voice class procedures; as a rational, tested system for the development of fundamental vocal technique adaptable to either class or private instruction; and as an anthology of thirty-two art songs by American composers for use as primary material in the voice class. The section on vocal technique incorporates an empirical approach to the fundamentals of voice production, including such items as posture and breathing, as well as an explanation of the necessary coordination of all physical aspects of the singing mechanism. The anthology of thirty-two songs has been carefully selected from the range of the American art song to represent a variety of compositional techniques and vocal styles.
