Going home. For some the possibility arouses warm feelings of well-remembered good times. For others, it summons intimidating recollections of adolescent trials and humbling missteps. And then there are those, like Tom Fedder, for whom the prospect of going home produces only dread. For decades he has sidestepped every reason to revisit Tanner. Finally, a last visit is necessary. He plans a quiet, under-the-radar return to conduct his business, collect a few things, and make his escape, while carefully avoiding all contact with them - Linda Fedder and the family he had deserted forty years before. Meanwhile, Linda is busily reinforcing her own defenses, preparing to fend off the one she must avoid like the Devil himself. On their own the two of them might have maintained the rigid separation each of them wants so badly. But by the time Tom's step-son Rick meets the family he had never heard of, especially Sandy, the granddaughter Tom did not know he had, the parents' determined efforts at isolation are under siege. While the young pair set out to find their own common ground, Tom is considering other, more hopeful possibilities, and running headlong into Linda's stubborn resistance.
