"Language" is firmly back on the agenda of teaching English but no longer in terms of the formal teaching of traditional grammar. This book aims to provide an introduction to the field for those English teachers trying to equip themselves for the teaching of language within the National Curriculum. It helps teachers to develop an understanding of those areas of modern linguistics which are relevant to the classroom but which have been absent from their own education.
