We left from Cavuoti at three in the morning to reach Benevento by five...My father walked about three kilometers with me, until we caught up with the others. Then he loaded me down with the bag that he had been carrying on his shoulder and left. I was so surprised that a lump rose in my throat and I could not even say 'Goodbye.' He had already gone a good distance before my voice returned and I could call out to him. He turned and said, not so much to me as to the whole group, 'Help each other out.
