As a young man, the author was invited to participate in what was supposed to be a fun trip to the Amazon as a casual tourist. Once there, the party that he was with gets lost. Then, to make matters worse, the author himself accidentally became separated from the rest of the group. Alone, in an unexplored part of the most savage jungle on earth and with no previous experience in the wilderness: no food, no water, no tools or weapons he must survive or die. This is a story about survival in the most desperate circumstances. About life and death, and about faith and redemption and love. It is also a story about a young American boy growing up in South America during a period known as, The Dirty War, which was between the communists and the established order at that time. The story is told with what can only be described as the brutal truth. There is much in the narrative which describes the violence and moral ambiguity about living in South America at that time.
