November 1, 2008: As I knelt on the cold, wet sand of Panama City Beach, my life over the 25-odd years flashed through my mind... In 1983 I sat watching television with my mother. A sporting came on that fascinated me. People had to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112, and then run 26.2 miles. Furthermore, the athletes had to get weighed at each transition to make sure they had not lost too much weight. "Mom, do you think I could ever do that?"Thus, begins the story of one man's journey from a fat, out of shape, lonely, and miserable man to the finish line of Ironman Florida 2008. Infused with humor and inspiration, his story will have you laughing and crying in equal measure, as he recounts the ups and downs and seminal moments of his journey. Some may find his story inspiration and even amazing, but the truth is, his story is common at the finish line of any Ironman or marathon. But, that's what makes it special, an ordinary person overcoming life's challenges to achieve a seemly absurd, ridiculous and to some impossible goal.
