The Royal Street Elves is a fable set in the late 1800's about the difficult choices faced when one must do the right thing to save our earth's environment and its creatures. Young Michael Mouchet enjoys his mother's nightly, candlelight readings about the elves who tend the whale oil burning lamps on Royal Street. One day, his father interrupts story time with the news of a new invention: the electric light bulb. And declares, soon there would be no need for whale oil-burning lamp posts, or the elves who tend them. Mortified, Michael protests. But his father declares it's all in the good name of progress. Michael resolves he must warn Mr. Chips and the other Royal Street elves. Meanwhile, the elves tending the lampposts, so used to a dignified and secure life writing poetry and playing music on the recorder, are outraged when a notice from the General Light Company proclaiming the somber news appears outside their lampposts. With the help of their man-boy friend Michael, Mr. Chips and the elves set off on an adventure to protect their lifestyle. But as Mr. Chips, upon reading Moby Dick, learns of the connection between the whale oil burning street lamps and the harpooning and killing of whales, he is faced with a moral dilemma and making a decision to forever change the elves on Royal Street and the way they live.
