Before you begin this study, introduce yourself to the Bible. I have chosen to use the New King James Version of the Bible. It is a modern language version of the King James Version which was first published in 1611. Look carefully at the first pages, table of contents, any introduction and explanation of how to use your Bible. You might know that there are two parts to the Bible; the Old Testament which contains books beginning with Genesis and ending with the book of Malachi. The second part, the New Testament, begins with the book of Matthew and ends with the last book of the Bible, Revelation. You will see when you open to the first page of Genesis that it begins in “Chapter 1.” And Verse 1 reads, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” If you were to ask for a reference to that verse it would read as such: Genesis (the book) 1 (the Chapter number), a colon to separate Chapter and verse, and 1 (the number of the verse). It would look like this: Genesis 1:1. The first question in Lesson One asks you to read Genesis Chapter 1, verses 1 through 31 and Genesis Chapter 2, verses 1 through 3. It would look like this: Genesis 1:1-31 and Genesis 2:1-3. Further along in the Bible you will find books named: 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel, for example. Referred to as “first Samuel and second Samuel” respectively, they are separate books which may have the same author or subject, but are set at different times. An example from the New Testament would be 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians, which are letters written by the apostle Paul to the Corinthian church at different times. There are sixty-six books in the Bible which were written over a period of fifteen hundred years. There are thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New Testament. It was written by forty different authors as they were inspired by God. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…” 2 Timothy 3:16. May the Lord inspire you as you look into His Word and may
