The Church of Jesus Christ is the mystical body of Christ in this world. It was founded by Jesus towards the end of his ministry as He was giving himself to die for all of us to bring peace between mankind and God, take our sins upon Himself, and bring salvation and eternal life as a free and abundant offer of grace for all. Jesus sent us, the Church with every member, to bring His good news and the hope and joy that comes with it to the ends of the earth, to all humankind; so that all may come to know Him. This is our mission as the Church. However, this universal Church is in a bad state. Far from being united, it is broken and divided into thousands of registered church organizations, denominations or traditions; rife with hypocrisy and corruption; full of false teachings; slow to react and weak. This is so, perhaps among other things, because there is confusion about what the good news actually is; there is hypocrisy of individual Christians, church organizations and their leaders; there is a common focus on status, money, appearance and luxury; there is discrimination based on gender, race, origin, culture and sexual orientation; there are a number of untenable faith positions that play into the hands of the many bitter enemies of the Church; there are many horrendous cases of sexual and other abuses, and their cover-ups; there are once again legalistic approaches to worship and prayer; there is exclusion or even rejection by the Church of those most in need; and finally, there is the 'false' conflict between Science and Faith. But what can we as simple members of the Church do about it? Perhaps more than we might think! For change to happen it must not only come top-down but also bottom-up. Still, if we think something is wrong, we must double-check ourselves first against what Jesus taught us, because sometimes people are wrong and make mistakes (including each of us). What we are talking about here is the most important mission we as Christians will ever have.
