Carolyn has recently entered her 80th decade with energy and enthusiasm, nourished and encouraged by friends and family, especially by Nadia Colburn’s online writing community. Second Story View, is Carolyn Mahnke's fourth poetry book. The poems are very different from than the previous three books of her "Howling" series as there is no over-riding theme or specific form. Some are written in lower case, with spaces instead of punctuation. Many take a free verse slant instead of strict meter or rhyme. Others use a familiar grammatical form. Most were composed after studying classic and modern poets as a part of Nadia Colburns’s online poetry and meditation classes. You may notice internal rhyme, many metaphors and other figures of speech.. The poems are an eclectic collection of a variety of subjects...pets, children, nature, feelings, family, seasons of life and love...each with a deeper meaning that comes from reading more than once. Hence the title, Second Story View. A poem's true meaning takes place in the mind of a reader...so as one poem states...each is "written just for you."
