An oxygen-limiting silo is a storage structure that has gastight walls, floor, and roof. Equipped with a breathing system, the structure provides a controlled atmosphere in which ensiled materials can be stored with a minimum of loss of both quantity & quality. It can be adapted to store many different livestock feeds. This bulletin describes the operation of oxygen-limiting silos, the types of these silos (steel, concrete, fibreglass), and the unloaders used with these silos to handle whole-plant silage and high-moisture grains. The final section explains the advantages of these silos.
