Young Faith Nickerson met, fell in love, and married Seth, the dashing young captain of a whaling ship out of New Bedford and Nantucket, Massachusetts. Then Seth was gone, out of touch but for the occasional letter. Faith lived the landlubber life of a school teacher, always keeping an eye on the horizon from their home on the cliff overlooking the Sound, thrilling, hoping for her husband's return, fearing for the many dangers a whaler faced. The Cut of her Jib is based on the logbook of a Cape Cod whaling captain that was tucked away in the attic of the family home for a hundred years, then lovingly rendered into a story of the exciting, dangerous and sometimes tedious life at sea through the letters he wrote to his wife.
