This is the story of the Jewish people who were exiled to Babylon in the 6th century BCE and stayed there amongst the Arabic peoples for 2500 years. It is also a story of a family's struggle to survive and a young girl's struggle for her identity. As with a brush, the author paints a compilation of spicy stories, some tragic, others comedic, all with beautiful flowing language to achieve descriptive pictures and scents which comprised the colorful culture of communal Jewish Kurdish life at the beginning of the 20th Century. The stories, which describe the many hardships and struggles of these peoples seem surrealistic, almost imaginary, but are based on real-life events. As the narrative gives the modern reader a sense of how things were, it also gives current Kurdish generations, young and old, inspiration to stand upright with heads held high, walking proudly in the path of their ancestors.
