Kan Yama Kan, The Black-Bound Notebooks, Nancy Sasson's second novel, exploits the capacity of her personal family history to give us, her readers, the story of the migration of a man and his family from the remote lands of the Middle East to America where they find the opportunity to develop in commerce. Through a dissatisfied protagonist, adventurous of heart in his youth and more settled entering middle age, the pages of Kan Yama Kan take us from the Syrian desert to the bustling Buenos Aires of the early twentieth century, only to return to Syria before embarking on his final journey to post-revolutionary Mexico, where he establishes himself with his wife and the family that begins to multiply. It is thus that the author transports us, through a series of means, without being a travelogue, to different geographical and emotional arenas, since we witness, among other places, through the years, a prolonged family visit to New York City, and not a few love stories.
