This study begins with a discussion about the meaning of biological diversity, and an examination of various measures of biodiversity. The study then considers the underlying presuppositions of various groups in the biodiversity debate, including those of preservationists and developers. Two general approaches are used to analyze the economics of biodiversity: the use of cost benefit analysis to value all functions of the natural environment, and the safe minimum standard of conservation approach, which modifies the minimax principle of game theory. Finally, the study assesses the implications of the findings for the preservation of old-growth forests in British Columbia.
