Excerpt:... In the case of his daughter, as of his younger son, the aim of Philip Augustus was to secure the interests of the throne by the alliances which promised most political advantage. His clear insight into the situation of the time showed him that these interests were to be fostered by the marriage of his daughter with powerful nobles near at hand, rather than with greater rulers at a distance. No touch of sentiment seems ever to have influenced him in giving a husband to his daughter; he valued such alliances solely for their political advantages. Philip's The part played by the illegitimate son of Philip Augustus was, Carlotus as was natural, comparatively unimportant. Peter Carlotus was born, probably, in 1208,1 and received his early training under the care of William the Breton, who dedicated the Philippide to him, conjointly with the crown prince.2 He was early designated for the church, and a dispensation from Honorius IH. in 1217 removed any bar to ecclesiastical preferment on account of illegitimacy.3 Soon afterward he was given the treasurership of Saint-Martin of Tours;4 and, at a very much later period, became bishop of Noyon.5 Last acts IL) With the coronation of Philip Augustus, the reign of Louis VII.
