This special issue of Acta Haematologica contains selected papers presented at the 11th International Symposium on Molecular Biology of Hematopoiesis, held in Bormio, Italy in June 1998. The following topics are considered: - the use of BMT for organ transplantation and autoimmune disease - new methods for stable gene transfer with increased transduction rate into pluripotent human stem cells - the state of the art in retrovirus gene transfer - the use of adenoviral- and retroviral-mediated interferon gene transfer for a possible treatment of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia and colon cancer Bringing together the experience of leading specialists, this publication will be appreciated by hematologists, oncologists, and scientists working on gene therapy.
