From the time the area which became known as Manatee County was settled, interesting and colorful people have been a part of its rich history. After Manatee County was created in 1855, a local government was established along with the local judiciary - justices of the peace and a probate judge. The Civil War hindered the local government for a few years but after the war, it was not long until the legal profession began developing in Manatee County. As the justice system developed over the years, many of the people involved were and are incredibly interesting and colorful. Some were and are downright entertaining! Manatee County became a great place to live with a small-town atmosphere which was supported by community leaders. For most of its history, practicing law in Manatee County also had that same small-town atmosphere. Lawyers knew each other and the experienced lawyers mentored the younger lawyers. Judges were also willing to mentor lawyers. When the Manatee County Bar Association was established in the early 1900's, it immediately focused on supporting the administration of justice and encouraging a sense of comradery between the local lawyers. The Association also served the community and encouraged lawyers to do the same. At some time during their career, most lawyers serve others by representing them for free - pro bono. But lawyers serve Manatee County in many other ways. That includes serving as an elected or appointed official or working on their own on a project that benefits the community or maybe belonging to a service club whose goal is to provide service to the community. To most lawyers, volunteering their time in the community is as important as practicing law. This book is not only about how the legal profession developed in Manatee County, but also about the colorful characters who practiced and still practice law in the region.
