For a couple of years a friend and I joked that someone should write a book on the excuses we use while playing pickleball. So this past summer, armed with pencil and paper, I made it my mission to write down what I overheard. I set the goal at 101 excuses, because it is a wacky and somewhat catchy sounding number that other people have used when making books like this. Originally I wondered if the goal of 101 was possible. How many excuses could there be? Shockingly, as I began the project I heard a new excuse during every game, and often several. The myriad of excuses were astounding. It took three weeks to blow past 101. I’m already prepping for Volume Two. Much of 101 Excuses is a humorous look at the excuses we use when playing pickleball. My goal was to make the book a fun read. However, it is serious at times and even ratchets to a rant on issues that seem important (to me). So with all that in mind, consider adding this list of 101 excuses to the famous ones in your life, like those that go to Santa or serve as your bucket list. I’m not interested in competing with the lists of Schindler, Craig, or the generations of Adam listed in the Bible. Rather, lists like Satchel Page’s “How to Stay Young” or Ben Franklin’s “13 Virtues” have real world application, and that is ideally where my list should resonate. This is a no-judgment excuse book. If the excuse is appropriate, it’s appropriate. I’d be shocked if you can’t find lots of your own. Go ahead, count them, and send them to: PickleballExcuses@gmail.com I’ll get back to you. No excuse if I don’t. However be aware, your excuses define you.
