In the 5th century BC, Syracuse becomes the capital of a kingdom that also includes Gela and many other territories of Eastern Sicily. For the city it is a period of great wealth and growth, which the tyrant Gelone wants to celebrate with new neighborhoods and new monuments. Neapolis is the heart of this urban expansion, and was born with the dual intention of responding to the growing demographic pressure, and flaunting the power of Syracuse with imposing and majestic buildings. In correspondence with a part of this ancient district, there is now an archaeological park to preserve and enhance the monuments of the Greek and Roman ages. Born as a product of ancient urbanization, these monuments were saved from the threat of modern urbanization. This guide accompanies through the Archaeological Park of Neapolis which houses some of the most important monuments of the ancient Mediterranean in the world, such as the Ancient Theatre, which also hosted works by Aeschylus, the famous Latomìe, including L'Orecchio di Dioniso, the Grotta dei Cordari, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Ara of Ierone II.
