“Great and magical photos of landscapes that seem to come from another world.” – Patrick Geffroy Yorffeg This book is a collection of more than 200 black and white photographs of the stunning rock formations found in a remote area in New Mexico called the Valley of Dreams. The Navajo name for the area is Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah, which means “gray salt”, evidently referring to the appearance of this badlands region. The Valley of Dreams is located just north of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a 90-minute drive from Farmington. It is just south of the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, a sister-site that it closely resembles. Geologists believe that 70 million years ago much of New Mexico was covered by an inland sea. When the water eventually receded, it left behind a jumble of sandstone, shale, and coal which lay undisturbed for millions of years. Twelve thousand years ago, at the conclusion of the last ice age, the waters from melting glaciers eroded the landscape, creating the strange rock formations on display in the Valley of Dreams.
