The idea of freedom of speech, which we enjoy today, has not always been accepted. Beginning with the ancient Greeks, free speech has evolved over time. Even in the United States, whose Constitution included freedom of speech, the concept and the laws regarding it have changed. Author Jodi Icenoggle traces this evolution, explaining the laws and court cases dealing with freedom of speech, and focusing on the cases that reached the Supreme Court. The book concludes with a moot court exercise in which students can participate to increase their understanding of the ideas involved.
