Starting in World War I, an American family would hang a gold star in their windows to honor a child killed in military service. The mothers of these children were known as Gold Star Mothers. In 1928, a group of twenty-five of these mothers met in Washington, DC, to establish the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., to support grieving families and provide service to wounded soldiers and veterans. Their legacy of service is an important yet often unknown chapter in American history.
