In this book, David Sivier explores the city's origins as a royal burh in the eleventh century, its connection with the royal manor of Barton Regis and the establishment of a judicial centre under a reeve. He also looks at the location and construction of the burh defences, and of the Norman town walls and castles, and describes the Norman cathedral churches. In addition he covers the day-to-day life of the city, from farming and industry to the construction of the city docks.
