By arranging the essential points in a concise and clear manner, I have attempted to compile the work so methodically, as to avoid any possibility of confusion or ambiguity. It is written on the theory that it will not be simply read and then laid aside, but rather will be studied, practised, and assimilated into one's game. The remedies suggested for topping and slicing, which are the chief faults of beginners, and also of the advanced player, should prove beneficial. For one who is off his game, it ought to be of valuable service. Many technical terms which a student of the game may have heard and not understood are explained.
