McKeon is a retired career Fire Lieutenant from the West Shore Fire District in the city of West Haven ( IAFF 1198 ). He served 29 years on the career force and is a life member of the volunteer organization where he got his start in the fire service. He is a Connecticut State certified EMT, a state and nationally certified HazMat Technician, a Firefighter level III, a Fire Instructor level I, a Fire Officer level I, and holds a BS Degree in Fire Technology, an AS degree in Chemistry and an AS Degree in Fire and Occupational Safety. He is a member of the Connecticut Fire Photographer's Association, the Connecticut Fire Instructor's Association, the Connecticut Firefighter's Historical Society, the Connecticut Fire Equipment Mechanics Association, and an honorary member of the Litchfield County Fire Chief's Association.
