Historical account of the establishment of the benevolent society in 1813 and its subsequent achievements in addressing social problems of the community and providing support and assistance to the disadvantaged. The society was behind the introduction of a pension for the aged in Australia. The appendix contains a chronology of events and a list of the society's presidents. Indexed. The author was appointed president of the society in 1993 having been a director since 1972. He has also published numerous works on aspects of local history.
