This book is based on course in quantum mechanics for undergraduate students. An attempt has been made to emphasize the physical basis of the subject, but without undueneglect of its mathematical aspects. The book includes all short of the problems viz; subjective, objective and numerical problems which suffice for all those who are preparing forvarious type of examinations.The early chapters of the book provide an introduction to the subject along essentialhistorical lines. Physical problems that leads to the development of quantum mechanicsare described in Chapter 1, and the "old quantum theory" is outlined. In chapter 2, thefoundation of wave mechanics are laid in terms of the wave-particle duality: uncertaintyprinciple. In chapter 3 I have introduced the concept of the wave packets. Schr´’odingerequation for a free particle is presented in chapter 4. The theory of the quantum mechanicsis discussed in chapter 5 and chapter 6. These chapters explain the formal structure of thesubject through discussion of linear operators, eigenfunctions, and commutation relations.The theory of Schr¨odinger equation and selected one dimensional problems are worked outin chapter 7. The chapter 8 and chapter 9 include various applications of time dependentSchr¨odinger equation in one, two and three dimensional space. Harmonic oscillator andconcept of raising and lowering operators are discussed in chapter 10. Spherically symmetric Schr´’odinger equation is developed in chapter 11 to understand the quantum mechanicsof hydrogen atom. The theory of angular momentum is worked out in chapter 12. Chapter13 to chapter 19 deal to the application of quantum mechanics to spectroscopy for one andmany electrons. The concept of electron spin is evolved in chapter chapter 14 by means ofStern Gerlach experiment.
