Maria Horvath, a sixteen year old girl, flees from her home in Budapest in 1956 after a failed attack. Her brother is slain during the attack. She arrives in the village Kempen Nijlen in Belgium, where she later falls in love with Joseph. She studies medicine and continues her studies in the field of surgery. Joseph studied engineering after his military service. In 1968, the Prague Spring breaks out. Rebellious as she is, Maria cannot resist the urge to help the insurgents. She remembers her struggle and her brother who died back in 1956. However, she is immediately captured. During her captivity, she writes in a journal to her "lost love."
