The impetus for this book came in 1972 when Epsy Johnson, cultural arts chairman of the National Homemakers Association, suggested that each state association make a record of all the areas of cultural, scenic and historical interest within its boundaries. And so, Kentucky's state cultural arts chairman, with guidance and help from the state advisor and local homemakers groups, compiled a booklet of Kentucky's treasure trails. The booklet, a precursor to this book, was used successfully by county homemaker groups and gained national recognition from the National Extension Homemakers Council. Still the association members were not satisfied with the small booklet, and decided that a much more detailed book would be more useful. Under the guidance of the 1974-77 state cultural arts chairman, her committee and state advisor, through the efforts of the area, county and club cultural arts chairmen, the Kentucky Homemakers uncovered even more "hidden treasures," gathered the data and compiled the information into this book. It is a composite of the contributions of the more than 31,000 members in the state. With the help of this book, you will be able to travel throughout Kentucky, finding a myriad of interesting and unique places. We invite you to enjoy the scenic and cultural interests first hand then to share our beautiful state with the people outside our boundares.
