From the back cover: "This collection of essays on the Soviet Union under the 'collective leadership' that replaced Nikita Khruschev is the offshoot of a highly successful series of lectures on the subject sponsored by the Program of Soviet and East European Studies of Carleton University, Ottawa, held there in 1968 for the academic community, members of the Canadian Government, foreign diplomats and the general public. Besides the lecturers' contributions, revised and to some extent updated for this edition, several additional essays were commissioned in order to provide a broader view of the subject. Following an opening essay on Khruschev's removal from power, other articles deal with economic, political and various aspects of the change brought about by the quiet but significant change of leadership in the Kremlin, whose effects were soon evident on both sides of the 'iron curtain.' Although the emphasis is on political questions, there are several essays dedicated to religion, literature, law and the military establishment, each contributed by a specialist in the field."
