The waters of the Atlantic Ocean are inhabited by a wide range of starfishes (asteroidea), which form an important component of food chains, are significant ecologically, and are easily recognized biological indicators. Previous studies have not produced a consistent assessment of the validity, number and ranges of species of the starfishes for all four quadrants of the Atlantic or correlated their trans-oceanic affinities.
