This book examines NATO's debate over strategy in the 1960s which pitted American proposals for greater emphasis on conventional defense against European preferences for heavy dependence on nuclear deterrence. The author brings to light US perspectives on tactical nuclear weapons and non-nuclear defense in the 1960s, and probes the varied responses in France, Great Britain and West Germany.
