Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Donor Perspective of Right Lobe Adult-to-Adult Live Donor Liver Transplantation submitted by See Ching CHAN for the Degree of Master of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong in August 2005 Donors of adult-to-adult live donor liver transplantation (ALDLT) undergo a very major surgical operation which carries a 0.5% mortality, 20% morbidity, and has unknown long-term consequences. Despite these caveats, ALDLT is now an accepted treatment modality and has saved the lives of thousands of patients with end-stage liver disease of various etiologies and small unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The rapid adoption of ALDLT is associated with the scarcity of deceased donor liver grafts. However, pure demand from the recipient should not progress to ALDLT. To a minimum, it is the potential donor's perception of the expected recipient outcomes and the donor costs which substantiates such voluntarism. Nonetheless, the potential donors are seldom trained to make such decisions. We as guardians are obligated to guide the potential donors and the potential recipients throughout the process. Conversance of contemporary donor and recipient outcomes is therefore mandatory.
