I had a stroke at 27 years old. In February 2023, a sudden cryptogenic stroke derailed my medical pursuits, left me unable to stand for months and gave me a new perspective on life. After 3 years of medical school, 1 year of research, an active sports life and with a highly optimistic future, it seemed to be pulled away in seconds. Why me? That doesn’t matter though. As with all other challenges in my life, I was going to hit this one head on. I had no choice. With hard work, incredible medical care, and a little luck, my recovery has been fantastic. What surprised me the most was the amazing outpouring of support from friends and even strangers. It was overwhelming as I received over 100 visitors while in the hospital. This clarified the meaning of life for me - the relationships and interactions we have superimposed on our experiences gained. Going through this encounter makes me cringe at ever complaining about board exams or the stress of a little midnight studying. After this experience, I refuse to take others’ situations for granted. Doctors, nurses, friends all gave me 100 percent and I will strive to never be less than optimal with what I can do for others in return. Nor doing less for myself. The first step to achieving a lot is believing your can.
